Problem

New users dropped off heavily during onboarding, especially at KYC and funding stages. Support volume was high and time-to-first-trade was inconsistent.

Approach

  • Funnel analysis to identify drop-off points.

  • Usability testing (10 participants) across onboarding stages.

  • Prototyped guided flows and error-handling improvements.

Decisions

  • 5-step guided path with progress tracking and save & resume.

  • Context-aware help for funding methods and address verification.

  • Accessible error handling with retry flows and clear next steps.

Result

  • 80% of testers reported better understanding of trade setup.

  • 3/4 completed trade tasks faster than control group.

  • Live results (target): ↑ KYC pass-through by 15%, ↓ median time-to-first-trade by 25%.

My contribution

Designed flows, prototypes, and copy. Ran usability sessions. Defined analytics events for funnel tracking. Product + compliance teams owned vendor integration and policy decisions.

Takeaways

  • Adding contextual tooltips and progressive steps helped make a dense platform feel more human and less intimidating.

  • Some of the most effective guidance points were not flashy features - but basic task help (like setting limits or finding trade history).
